OUR MISSION

The mission of North Haven Sustainable Housing is to provide housing opportunities to sustain a year-round island community on North Haven. The mission shall be accomplished by a) developing residential properties for sale to island individuals and families, b) creating and operating year-round rental housing for individuals and families, c) developing housing opportunities for elderly or disabled residents that will allow them to remain members of the year-round community, and d) facilitating energy efficiency programs for the island.

our why

The island of North Haven is a beautiful and special place. The community is composed of a mix of people born and raised here, those who come and go, and those who come and stay. The island sustains a year-round population of roughly 400 people, yet is considered home to many more. Our population triples in the summertime. This balance of year-round and seasonal residents helps to keep our community thriving, while also presenting its own set of challenges. Property values are high, and many homes are either not winterized or are old and inefficient. Our goal is to keep our year-round community thriving by providing affordable, efficient housing that will stay in our year-round community. Affordable housing strengthens our economy and bolsters our school system. If a year-round resident can’t find affordable housing here, then they can’t live here, work here, raise a family here, or contribute to the community in their own unique way. We all love this place. Let’s work together to sustain our beautiful community.

what we do and who we serve

We aim to provide housing opportunities to sustain a year-round island community. We provide housing for our teachers, students, builders, caretakers, fishermen, bakers, and artists. For the people who help to keep this island a desirable place to come back to over and over again, and to live in.

how we do it

We convert financial and physical (property) gifts from our loving community members into efficient and affordable homes, and we include an affordability covenant with the intention of keeping these homes affordable and lived in year-round.
